Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a treatment that removes unwanted hair using light. This therapy damages individual hair follicles with heat from the laser beam without affecting the surrounding skin. When the follicle is damaged, hair will no longer grow.

Laser hair removal is a comfortable and permanent alternative to waxing, shaving, or tweezing unwanted hair.

What types of hair can be removed?

Dr. Gorens recommends laser hair removal for the following areas:

  • Arms
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Bikini area
  • Face
  • Legs

The laser Dr. Gorens uses has a large target area, so it can treat the back, shoulders, abdomen, and legs quickly. She can treat areas on the face such as the lip, chin, and beard in a matter of minutes.

Treatments can be customized according to your hair color, texture, and hair location. Hair of any color -- including black, brown, and red -- can be treated. PLus, laser hair removal is effective on most skin types.

What can I expect during my hair removal appointment?

Dr. Gorens uses state-of-the-art laser technology. Depending on the size of your treatment area, your appointment can take a few minutes or up to one hour.

Dr. Gorens first cleans the treatment area, shaves the hair, and applies a cooling gel. When the treatment begins, gentle pulses of light are emitted from the handpiece. While they penetrate the skin to disable the hair follicles, you may feel a sensation resembling the faint snap of a rubber band, or a slight sting or pinch.

During your treatment, most of the unwanted hair falls away immediately. Any remaining hair falls out over a period of a week or two. You may experience blistering, soft scabbing, or redness at the treatment site, but these resolve quickly or within a few days.

Permanently eliminating unwanted hair can take up to six sessions, with intervals of up to a few months between each session.
